Subaru WRX — Deep Research (September 2026)
What the car is (September 2026)
The VB-generation WRX launched as a 2022 model on the Subaru Global Platform: 2.4L turbo flat-four (FA24F), 271 hp / 258 lb-ft, 6-speed manual or Subaru Performance Transmission (CVT), full-time AWD, four doors, a wing delete, and enough black plastic cladding to start a four-year argument. Lineup now runs Base → Premium → Limited → GT → tS, priced $32,495–$44,995 for 2026. The 2025 tS is the closest thing to a dead STI: STI-tuned adaptive dampers, Brembos, Recaros, 12.3-inch digital cluster. The STI itself was killed for this generation — emissions regs, Subaru said — and the community still hasn't moved on.
Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)
- Facebook: "Subaru VB 2022+ WRX Owners Group" (~66,000 members) — the single biggest WRX community and the core signal. September 2026 feed: mod/tuning threads dominate (intakes, Accessports, etunes), mod-part classifieds, autocross/track chatter, a 136-comment thread dissecting 2026 trim pricing (Base $32,495 → tS $44,995). Reliability anxiety threads are comparatively rare; the culture is "drive it, mod it, talk about it." A member hit "100k miles, no problem" — celebrated, not debated.
- NASIOC forums (the WRX old country) — the VB vs VA split, captured honestly: launch threads call the cladding "disgusting" (TheStraightPipes), "an Outback with a sedan body," "the clad circus." But owners who actually drove it keep converting: "Driving it was a good experience, felt nimble and the steering response was good... besides the rear end it is better than the VA WRX but it's still not an STI." The pragmatic wing: "the plastic fender cladding isn't bad on gray or black ones and it will keep the Subaru cheap paint better protected" from gravel rash. VA loyalists counter that the VA looks like a Sentra/Corolla anyway and every Subaru is "cute ugly." The split is real: aesthetics are the fight, the driving is the truce.
- The Autopian / CarComplaints / NHTSA — the RTV oil-pickup issue: excess silicone sealant in the FA24 oil pan clogging the pickup screen. 87% of 2022 NHTSA complaints relate to it. Documented on multiple cars across two continents (Prime Motoring NJ, StepUp Automotive Australia, RallySport Direct, private owners). One PA owner reported engine failure from oil starvation under 4,000 miles. No Subaru recall; Subaru has not publicly responded. Removal requires dropping the header and oil pan (several hours labor); full pickup removal needs the timing cover off. Owners worry that dropping the pan themselves voids warranty.
- Threads — thin: tuner-shop engagement posts ("post up your ride"), no sustained owner testimony.
- Instagram — not accessible via available tools for public owner search; no claims made.
Reliability record
- The FA24F is mechanically stronger than the FA20 it replaced (thicker cylinder walls, beefier rods, beehive valve springs, direct injection) and tuners praise its headroom — it handles power increases without the FA20's fragility.
- RTV-in-oil-pickup is the defining VB issue: pattern documented, severity debated (Autopian notes the five-sided pickup screen keeps flowing unless severely clogged; risk rises at sustained high RPM/track use). No factory fix.
- 2022 recall 23V016000: owner's manual EyeSight high-beam instructions — paperwork, not parts.
- Spontaneous sunroof shattering reports (small number, NHTSA "other" category).
- Infotainment: giant portrait screen controlling seat heaters/HVAC draws complaints ("not sold on the giant screen for seat heaters and temperature control").
- Clutch: no widespread factory defect surfaced in the research window; VA-era abrupt clutch engagement complaints faded for VB. (Mark as no documented VB clutch recall.)
- Consumer Reports declined to recommend the 2023 WRX early on — but their data was from previous generations; by most owner measures the VB is the more robust car.
Support reality
- Dealer network is the enthusiast complaint: warranty denial risk if you touch the oil pan yourself for the RTV cleanup; tuned cars get the usual scrutiny. Subaru corporate's silence on RTV is the community's biggest grievance.
- Aftermarket is enormous — the FB group's classifieds economy is proof. Parts availability excellent; tuner knowledge (IAG, Prime Motoring, D Mann) is deep and documented.
- WRX-specific shops exist nationwide; this is the best-supported car in the batch for third-party expertise.
Hype flags
- Moderate but inverted: the launch hype was negative (cladding backlash), and the car earned its audience back one test drive at a time. No big ad spend; the tS gets press love, but the community treats it as "STI tax without STI power." The GT's CVT-only setup is the community's punchline — "you're stuck in an automatic." Hype flag honest verdict: the car is under-hyped relative to how good the FA24 is; the STI nostalgia tax inflates used VA STI prices more than it flatters the VB. Community verdict: VB owners are converts; VA loyalists are holdouts; everyone agrees the STI should exist.
Model-year timeline 2021–2026
| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | Last year of VA generation (2.0L) | FA20 268 hp | VA known quantity; rev-hang, stiff ride | VA-era recalls | ~$18–24k (used market) | | 2022 | VB launch (Subaru Global Platform) | New FA24F 2.4L turbo 271 hp; 6MT or SPT CVT | RTV oil-pickup reports begin; first-year growing pains | 23V016000 (owner's manual EyeSight text) | ~$21–28k (eBay listings: Premium manual ~$28k BIN) | | 2023 | Carryover; price +$1,525 | Unchanged | RTV pattern confirmed across continents | None major | ~$23–30k | | 2024 | TR trim added (Brembos, Recaros, manual-only ethos); EyeSight standard all trims | Unchanged | RTV discussion matures; no factory action | None major reported | ~$25–32k | | 2025 | tS trim (STI-tuned dampers, Brembos, Recaros, digital cluster) | Unchanged | Stable; community treats VB as proven at stock power | None major reported | ~$27–34k | | 2026 | Minimal changes | Unchanged | Too early for new data | None yet | New: $32,495–$44,995 |
Sweet-spot year: 2024 — TR gives you the STI-adjacent hardware (Brembos, Recaros) without tS pricing, the RTV issue is a known-known you can inspect for, and used prices have settled well under new. Years to skip: 2022 — first-year car carrying the RTV batch at peak and the launch-year price; 2021 — that's the old VA, a different (and for many, better-looking but less robust) car; buy it only if you want the VA specifically.
Raw quotes
"The fa24 engine for this car uses an RTV gasket to seal the oil pan... pieces of RTV to fall off inside of the oil pan. This can cause a clog in the oil pickup which may result in oil starvation." — CarComplaints/NHTSA, 2022 WRX owner "Caused engine failure from oil starvation at under 4000 miles." Unsurprisingly, this Subaru WRX's oil pickup tube was "filled with bits of liquid gasket/RTV." — Lemberg Law, PA owner "Most will not be able to have this cleaned out themselves and would only have the option to pay the dealership or an independent shop to do the work." — CarComplaints, 2022 WRX owner (MD) "It's really fun, but that redline it gets to you way quicker than you think it would at 6,000... It's a good mix of being able to off-road and on-road in a fun way." — TheStraightPipes (Yuri), 2022 WRX review "Look at the Chevy Avalanche... NOBODY BOUGHT THE FIRST GEN. It looked like such **** with all that plastic cladding on it." — NASIOC, VB launch thread "I finally went and test drove a 22 wrx... Driving it was a good experience, felt nimble and the steering response was good... besides the rear end it is better than the VA WRX but it's still not an STI." — NASIOC, former '18 WRX / '21 STI owner "The plastic fender cladding isn't bad on gray or black ones and it will keep the Subaru cheap paint better protected." — NASIOC, VB pragmatist "What influenced your Subaru WRX trim choice?... 2026 U.S. pricing: Base - $32,495 ... tS - $44,995" — FB "Subaru VB 2022+ WRX Owners Group", Sept 2026 (136 comments) "100k miles, no problem" — FB "Subaru VB 2022+ WRX Owners Group", Sept 2026 "Removing the oil pan would void the warranty and is not in a serviceable location. Subaru of America has been made aware of these reports but has not responded with a recall." — Lemberg Law, MA owner
