Roewe D7 — Research File (September 2026)

What the car is (September 2026)

Mid-size sedan from Roewe (SAIC Motor), launched in China August 2023 in two flavors: D7 EV (pure electric, RWD, 145–154 kW, 59.2–68.5 kWh LFP/NMC, 510–610 km CLTC) and D7 DMH (plug-in hybrid: 1.5L 82 kW NA engine + 150 kW motor, 19.7–21.4 kWh LFP, 125 km electric, 1,400 km combined CLTC — set a Guinness World Record in Oct 2024 at 2,208 km without refueling/recharging). 4,890 mm long, 2,810 mm wheelbase, dual 12.3" screens, RWD + multi-link rear on the EV. China pricing around 130,000 RMB ($18,600–$20,800) for the EV. Export: launched in the Middle East as the MG8 PHEV on September 8, 2025; the D7 EV is also the basis of the MG 07 electric sedan. Successor: the Roewe M7 DMH (designed by ex-VW/Skoda design chief Jozef Kabaň) debuted 2025. NOT sold in the US or EU.

Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)

Threads search yielded nothing on the Roewe D7. Facebook group search returned no accessible public owner groups via the available tooling. Instagram: nothing substantive found. China-owner platforms are not accessible in English; accessible signal is press- and market-based:

  • China press (BitAuto, via Portuguese coverage, 2024): D7 EV market share growing in China; praised as "German-style" handling for the segment — RWD, 0–100 km/h in 6.5 s, five-link rear — breaking the "Chinese EVs can't handle" stereotype; positioned as the quality option among ~130k RMB B-segment EVs.
  • Guinness record coverage (Carscoops, Oct 2024): 2,208 km (1,372 miles) in four days across desert, gravel, snow and ice in the DMH PHEV — with sealed fuel cap and charging port, verified VIN. A serious efficiency statement.
  • Export owners: the MG8 PHEV launched in the Middle East in September 2025 — too new for any owner base to have formed; no owner evidence found.
  • EV database writeups (ev.motorwatt): price $20,850–$27,800 for the EV; performance figures quoted (7.3 s 0–100); read as marketing-adjacent, not owner evidence.

Reliability record

No formal reliability ratings; no documented failure pattern in accessible sources. The DMH hybrid hardware is SAIC's mature plug-in system; the EV runs a simple RWD single-motor LFP setup. Both the car and its successor platform are young (2023+). Nothing to warn about mechanically — and nothing to reassure with either. Tier 3 by design.

Support reality

China: full SAIC/Roewe network. Middle East: official SAIC/MG dealer networks carry the MG8 PHEV (from Sept 2025) — real support, but brand-new. EU/UK/US: no presence. Spare-parts pipeline for a Roewe-badged car outside China/ME does not exist; the MG8 PHEV's ME network is the only export channel with factory backing.

Hype flags

The Guinness record is genuine but it is marketing machinery — a manufacturer-staged four-day efficiency run with sealed ports. Impressive engineering proof, not owner evidence. The D7 name now sits between its own record and the arrival of the Kabaň-designed M7 successor, which will likely orphan the D7's spotlight in China.

Model-year timeline 2021–2026

| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | Not yet launched | — | — | — | — | | 2022 | Not yet launched | — | — | — | — | | 2023 | Launch (Aug 2023): D7 EV + D7 DMH | EV: 145/154 kW RWD, 59.2/68.5 kWh, 510–610 km CLTC; DMH: 1.5L NA + 150 kW motor, 19.7/21.4 kWh LFP, 125 km EV, 1400 km combined | First-year cars; no failure pattern surfaced | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2024 | DMH record version; M7 successor teased | Guinness run: 2,208 km sealed-tank range | China share growing; praised handling | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2025 | Carryover; MG8 PHEV launches Middle East (Sep 2025); Roewe M7 DMH debuts | M7: new-gen DMH, 160 km EV, 2050 km combined | ME launch too new for owner signal | None documented | AED ~81,995 (used 2026 D7 hybrid, UAE listing) | | 2026 | D7 aging in lineup as M7 ramps | No D7-specific changes documented | No failure patterns documented | None documented | UNVERIFIED |

Sweet-spot year: 2024 — why: mature first-production run, post-record DMH version, and the model year with the most positive China-market press before the M7 successor stole the spotlight. Years to skip: 2023 first-year cars are an unknown quantity outside China — but with no documented failures, the real advice is: buy the MG8 PHEV badging in the Middle East (factory support) over a grey Roewe import anywhere else.
