Renault Austral

If you're cross-shopping a RAV4 hybrid and the Renault dealer is offering you the Austral for less money, read this before you sign — the discount is real, and so is the reason for it.

The Austral is Renault's family SUV: 4.5 metres, five seats, a sliding rear bench, and a 200-horsepower full-hybrid system built around a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo and Renault's unusual clutchless multi-mode gearbox. On paper it's the complete package — genuinely efficient (owners report 4.9 to 6.4 litres per 100 km), a big 12-inch Google infotainment screen, five Euro NCAP stars, and pricing that undercuts the Japanese establishment. The 2026 facelift sharpens the styling and goes hybrid-only, which at least simplifies the lineup.

And the good stuff is real. Owners like the light, comfortable cabin, the practical sliding bench, and fuel bills that genuinely rival a Toyota. Renault climbed to 9th of 30 brands in Driver Power 2026 on the back of running costs and value, and the Austral's engine is economical without feeling wheezy. If your priorities are space, economy and a nice screen, the Austral delivers all three for less than the obvious alternatives.

But — and this is the part that keeps showing up in owner reports — the hybrid system has a personality, and not a good one. The most reported issue is hesitation and jerky acceleration when the car switches between electric and petrol modes: throttle delay, surging, the occasional clunk. Carexamer's UK fault database pins it on gearbox software calibration and, in worse cases, a worn hybrid clutch actuator — a part that lives in stop-start traffic and starts complaining from around 30,000 km. Some of this is fixable with software updates. Some of it is the hardware's character. Either way, you will feel it every single day in town driving, which is exactly where a hybrid should be at its smoothest.

The electronics pile on. The OpenR screen freezes and crashes, Bluetooth drops out, the cruise control cuts out when road markings vanish — without warning — and the start-stop system, per one owner aggregator, "works with bugs and needs to be manually switched off". None of this strands you. All of it wears you down. What Car?'s verdict is blunt: "a poor reliability record" plus a suspension that fidgets constantly on anything but smooth tarmac — Carwow notes the adaptive dampers that might have fixed this quietly disappeared from the options list. So you get the firm ride with no escape route.

Here's the practical question: how much does the discount have to be? Against a RAV4, the Austral is cheaper to buy and nearly as cheap to run, but the Toyota's hybrid system is the benchmark for smoothness and its warranty runs up to 10 years against Renault's three. That three-year warranty on a car whose main weakness is its hybrid transmission is, frankly, not enough. The hybrid battery itself gets 8 years/100k, which helps, but the gearbox doesn't.

Who should skip it? If you do mostly urban driving — where the gearbox's jerkiness lives — and you plan to keep the car past the warranty, skip it and buy the Toyota or a Hyundai Tucson hybrid. The Austral only makes sense if you're buying new or nearly new, keeping it inside warranty, and the price gap is big enough to matter to you.

The community verdict is fair rather than damning: a likeable, economical family SUV let down by a transmission that never quite learned its manners and electronics that glitch. The 2026 facelift's higher prices (€41,900 to €46,000 in France, up €7,000 at entry) make the value case harder, not easier.

Sweet spot: a 2025 car — late enough for the software updates, early enough to dodge the facelift's price hike. Avoid 2022 cars if you're cautious; they're where the hybrid-calibration complaints peak. And whatever year you buy, budget for the possibility that the gearbox will never feel like a Toyota's — because it won't.
