Polestar 2 — deep research (September 2026)

Powertrain: full EV. Availability: EU, UK, Canada, Australia/Singapore and other export markets. NOT the US for new cars — Polestar 2 pulled from the US configurator April 2025; the brand's US new-car exit was formalized June 2026 (US Commerce Dept BIS denied authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule; sales wind down from MY2027). 32 US dealers continue servicing existing cars. Chinese domestic market presence is negligible — the car is built in China (Luqiao, Zhejiang) but essentially an export product.

What the car is (September 2026)

The Polestar 2 is the Geely-owned Swedish brand's original volume car — a fastback "liftback" sedan aimed squarely at the Tesla Model 3, launched 2020 on the Volvo CMA platform with Android Automotive (Google built-in) as its headline party trick. The facelifted car (MY2024 onward) runs single-motor RWD (299 hp, 82 kWh CATL battery, up to 655 km WLTP on the Long Range Single Motor, 205 kW DC) or dual-motor AWD (421 hp; Performance Pack 455–476 hp / up to 350 kW, 0–100 km/h ~3.6–4.5 s). Cargo ~446 L plus frunk (UNVERIFIED for the facelift year — quoted from spec sheets). It's the best-driving Geely-family EV of its generation and the one that taught the world what a TCAM module is.

Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)

Sources searched: Facebook owner groups via facebook-cli (Polestar - USA, 4,000 members; Polestar North, ~1,000 members), Threads search via threads-cli, polestar-forum.com threads, recharged.com owner guide, press/owner reporting.

  • The $10,000 lease-buyout email (Facebook, "Polestar - USA", Sept 11, 2026). A member at the end of a 3-year P2 lease says they love the car and are buying it out — and that their dealer proactively emailed offering a $10,000 credit off the lease buyout. 40 reactions, 26 comments. The post also relays the dealer's line that Polestar expects to return to the US "in a couple years" because it's "moving the production of the operating system from China" — a salesperson claim, UNVERIFIED, but it shows how the brand is being talked about on showroom floors: exile as a temporary technicality, sweetened with fire-sale pricing to keep cars in owners' hands. This is the single clearest 2026 signal that US resale values are being actively propped up by dealers, not the market.
  • The TCAM megathread culture (polestar-forum.com). The forum's pinned "Ron Swanson method" post is a photo-documented ritual for disconnecting both the 12V battery and the TCAM module's own 3.6V backup battery — the fix owners perform when the car stops recognizing physical keys. Forum advice, in earnest: carry a wrench in the frunk (socket size varies by car — #10 or #11), carry a jump starter, and configure Phone-as-Key (still "beta") as a backup. The TCAM mega-thread ("TCAM issues... calling all owners", 2022) collates key-fob failures, dead LTE/GPS, and owners doing the 30-second front-demister-button TCAM reboot. A 2022 Belgian owner: first TCAM outage at 2 months/1,800 km, resets did nothing, came back to life an hour later for no apparent reason. Owners also report cars totally dead after parking — no lights, no unlock — traced to the 12V auxiliary battery.
  • recharged.com's 2025 owner guide (aggregates owner reports across 2021–2024 cars): the 12V battery is "the weak link behind many 'car won't wake up' stories"; infotainment freezes/reboots; connectivity/TCAM hiccups; charging frustrations; the rear-camera recall. Their verdict: mechanical drive-unit/HV-battery failures are comparatively rare — it's an electronics car, and electronics are where it breaks.
  • Canadian group description ("Polestar North", Sept 2026): "feel free to share your experience or rant about software issues in a non-toxic manner." Software grievances are so routine they're baked into the group's welcome text.
  • Threads (thin). A couple of scattered posts only: @saiseimx5miata (Aug 2026, 52 likes) — "New daily. Controversial I know. LRDM Performance Polestar 2." — the word "controversial" doing heavy lifting; and @markpetersesq (Jan 2024) on the giant center console: "HOW do you people drive with this MASSIVE BIT OF PLASTIC smashing into your knee???" No sustained owner discourse found on Threads — not claimed, just noted.
  • Press-as-owner-proxy: Jalopnik (July 2026) on the 2022 car: "you're also buying into a brand with a US retail footprint that's actively winding down — a trade worth making only if the discount is steep enough to offset both."

Instagram: no IG-specific owner signal accessible via my tools — thin/absent, not fabricated.

Social pulse (qualitative): a car owners genuinely love to drive and defend, wrapped in an electronics-and-support story that keeps fraying. The US community has a siege mentality now — dealer credits, buyout encouragement, and exile jokes. In Europe the car is simply the aging premium EV you buy cheap used. No cult, no mass revolt: warm affection, cold 12V batteries.

Reliability record

  • Electronics, not the drivetrain. Drive units and HV batteries hold up; nearly every recurring failure is 12V/TCAM/software/camera. This is the defining Polestar 2 reliability fact.
  • TCAM outages: loss of key recognition, LTE, GPS. Persists across model years despite OTA updates (The Drive documented it in 2022; forum ritual posts still pinned in 2024). Reboots are temporary fixes; the 12V+TCAM disconnect is the owner's last resort.
  • 12V battery: small lead-acid/AGM unit; low-voltage warnings in the app, slow infotainment, cars dead after parking. A dedicated 2025 recall (handful of MY2025 cars built Mar–Apr 2024) covered the high-to-low-voltage converter module (HLCM) damaging from 12V fluctuations → loss of drive power.
  • Rear camera, the three-act tragedy: 24V477 (2024) → 25V280 (Apr 2025, OTA) → 25V615/RP1069 (Sept 11, 2025) after NHTSA found both prior remedies failed (109+ post-update complaints; NHTSA Recall Query July 2025). ~27,816 cars, built July 2020–Nov 2024. Final software remedy was expected late Q1 / early Q2 2026 — status at time of writing UNVERIFIED. Cars previously "fixed" under the earlier recalls need the new remedy too.
  • Drive-axle clicking (2021–2023 AWD): widely acknowledged in forums and by service centers; Polestar replaced axles with a redesigned part (visible rubber damper) under warranty, standard on 2024+ cars. No formal recall — a TSB/warranty campaign.
  • Launch-year glitch (2020): propulsion shutdown / "weird glitch that makes the cars stop driving" — ~2,200 early cars recalled for propulsion-system software; some sat at dealers for a month.
  • Bumper-to-bumper warranty 4 yr/50k mi: 2021–2022 cars are now out of it. 8 yr/100k mi battery/motor warranty still has years left. Certified pre-owned adds 2 yr unlimited mileage.
  • UNVERIFIED: Consumer Reports / J.D. Power P2-specific scores — neither publishes a public reliability score for the car (Jalopnik, 2026).

Support reality

  • US: new-car sales end after MY2026 inventory sells through; 32 dealers "continue to support existing customers." OTA updates continue, but US owners are effectively driving an orphan — parts and service through a shrinking dealer net. Polestar Canada continues normally.
  • OTA competence is real but limited: the camera saga proves some fixes need dealer visits; three software attempts over two years failed before the third recall.
  • Dealer generosity as a support signal: $10,000 lease-buyout credits (Sept 2026, FB group) — dealers would rather keep you in the car cheaply than take the car back into a dead market.
  • EU/UK: normal brand presence; the car is still sold new there.

Hype flags

  • Launch-era press (2020–2021) loved the design and Android Automotive, positioning it as the thinking person's Model 3. The awards-and-design halo outran the electronics reality — TCAM threads were already massive by 2022 while reviews stayed glowing.
  • 2026: the "controversial daily" framing on Threads and the enthusiast-press line that it's "finally" good (CarSauce, 2026 review of the facelift) — the facelift is genuinely much improved, but reviewers test the best spec while owners live with the 12V.
  • No evidence of astroturf; the hype is press/enthusiast-driven.

Sweet-spot year: 2024 (Long Range Single Motor, facelift) — the 82 kWh battery, new RWD motor, 205 kW charging, redesigned drive axles, and most software demons exorcised; bought used in Europe/UK where the brand still exists and depreciation has already done the bleeding. In the US the sweet spot is the same car bought used at the depressed $28k–35k band — if you can live with an orphan badge.

Years to skip: 2021 — launch-year propulsion glitch, oldest TCAM/software stack, out of bumper-to-bumper warranty. US-market 2025s — tiny orphan run, camera-recall year, and the last US cars ever. And skip buying any Polestar new in the US in 2026 — there is no new Polestar 2 to buy there.
