Peugeot 208 — Deep Research Package

Research date: September 2026 | Powertrain: ICE / 48V hybrid / EV | Validation: Tier 2 Not sold in the US. Not sold in China (Peugeot's China range is 408/508/2008/3008/5008 — no 208). EU/UK only.

What the car is (September 2026)

Second-gen 208 (2019–present, facelifted 2023), CMP-platform sibling of the Corsa. Range: 1.2 PureTech petrols (75/100/130 PS — wet belt), 48V hybrids (100/136 PS — chain), 1.5 BlueHDi diesel (phased out), and e-208 in 136 PS (50 kWh, ~362 km WLTP) and 156 PS (51 kWh, ~410 km WLTP). Big 2026 news: Peugeot is replacing the PureTech with a new chain-driven engine (8-year/160,000 km warranty) that started rolling out on the 208 in March 2026 — and dropping the PureTech name. France's design darling, Europe's small-car style pick.

Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)

  • Facebook groups: none found. "Peugeot 208" / "Peugeot 208 II" returned zero groups; bare "208" returned only a signal company and an American Legion post — failed source; replaced with French owner forums.
  • forum-peugeot.com — owner thread "Faut-il se fier au moteur des Peugeot 208 datant de 2020?" The belt debate in full: one owner (2020 208 GT Line 100 EAT8, 41,000 km) reports no problems with annual servicing; another posts a survival program — belt replacement every 2 years (~€800), annual 0W40 oil changes, SP98 fuel only; the rebuttal is the key line: "Mais le problème est bel et bien présent et n'a jamais vraiment été résolu. Ah si ils ont supprimé la courroie lors du restylage du moteur et ils ont supprimé le nom Puretech du moteur restylé." (The problem is real and never really solved — they just deleted the belt in the restyled engine and deleted the PureTech name.)
  • Matmut owner forum (verified 208 owners): recurring PureTech oil overconsumption, recurring electronic alerts, timing belt and AdBlue tank as watch points; a verified owner advises belt replacement every 5 years / 60,000 km "car vraiment un gros problème cette courroie de distribution."
  • autotitre.com forum: 2024 thread notes a class action over 1.2 PureTech oil consumption on gen-1 208s, with owners asking whether newer 208s fixed it — consensus: improved, "mais ce n'est pas non plus faramineux."
  • e-208 long-term (WhatCar, UK): winter range fell below 200 miles on the 51 kWh car, ~230 miles summer best; infotainment screen failed weeks after delivery; cheap-feeling plastics, wind/road noise, 100 kW max charging means ~1 h public stops from low range.
  • Autocar 2026 e-208 review: 6/10 — decent to drive, usable battery range, inviting interior; bad: high price, ergonomics, ride comfort, meagre back seat. Heat pump now standard.
  • fleetnews: new-powertrain e-208 does ~195 miles real; older version ~150 miles real — the 54 kWh car is the one to have.
  • Threads: no usable owner depth for the 208. Instagram: not searchable via available tools.

Reliability record

Same PureTech wet-belt story as the Corsa — it's the same engine family: porous belt, oil contamination, pickup clogging, engine damage risk; oil overconsumption as the companion complaint. The 2024 French oil-jet-nozzle recall covers PureTech 208s (2022–2024 builds). The 48V hybrids (chain) and the 2026-new chain engine sidestep it. Diesels: AdBlue tank failures and DPF issues on short-hop cars. e-208: no battery horror pattern; infotainment failures, winter range drop, and Stellantis-typical parts pricing.

Support reality

Big Peugeot network across EU; belt job ~€800 at a dealer; independents cheaper. Goodwill on belt failures is as inconsistent as at Opel — strict dealer service history helps, nothing guarantees. 8-year/160,000 km warranty on the new chain engine is the confidence signal.

Hype flags

  • The new chain engine launch (March 2026) is press-release phase — no owner record yet; do not present it as proven.
  • e-208 "410 km" WLTP vs. WhatCar's sub-200-mile winter reality — same WLTP gap as the Corsa Electric.
  • Autocar's 6/10 and "high price" verdict: the e-208 is the style choice, not the value choice, against the Renault 5.

Model-year timeline 2021–2026

| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | 208 II | PureTech 75/100/130; BlueHDi; e-208 136 PS / 50 kWh | Wet-belt failures accumulating | — | UNVERIFIED | | 2022 | 208 II | Carryover | Oil overconsumption reports; belt main topic | FR oil-nozzle recall (2022–2024 builds) | UNVERIFIED | | 2023 | 208 II facelift | New face, 10" screen; 48V hybrids 100/136 (chain); e-208 156 PS / 51 kWh (410 km) | Hybrids sidestep belt | — | UNVERIFIED | | 2024 | 208 II facelift | Carryover | Late builds most sorted | FR PureTech oil-jet recall verified | UNVERIFIED | | 2025 | 208 II facelift | Carryover | No new patterns | — | UNVERIFIED | | 2026 | 208 II facelift | New chain-driven petrol replaces PureTech (8yr/160k warranty), from March 2026 | New engine: no owner record | — | UK e-208 stock from ~£19,000; FR list UNVERIFIED |

Sweet-spot year: 2024 — why: facelift car, 48V hybrid with chain (no belt), late-build quality, pre-2026 transition pricing. Years to skip: 2019–2020, and any 2021–2023 non-hybrid 1.2 PureTech without documented belt service — why: wet-belt window with lottery goodwill; verify the 2024 oil-nozzle recall.
