NIO ES6 / EL7 review: a genuinely good car from a brand quietly leaving the room

The NIO ES6 — sold in Europe first as the EL7, then renamed the EL6, because Audi's lawyers have opinions — is for the bargain-hunter who wants premium EV hardware at distressed prices and understands exactly what "distressed" means here. Verdict: the car is good; the company around it in Europe is in managed retreat, and the price has to reflect that.

What it is. NIO's mid-size electric SUV and its best-seller: dual-motor, 490 hp, 0–100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, with 75 or 100 kWh batteries and a party trick nobody else offers — battery swapping in three to five minutes. First gen 2018, all-new second gen in 2023, facelift in China 2025. In China it's a mainstream premium success with 4,000+ swap stations. In Europe it's a slow-motion withdrawal.

What's genuinely good. Start with the engineering, because it deserves it. The cabin is properly premium — German testers have rated it above German premium in places. The second-gen car's packaging is excellent: more rear room, slimmer seats, a panoramic glass roof. And the swap system, where it exists, is the real deal: owners describe driving past their own home chargers because a five-minute swap two kilometers away is simply easier. Battery degradation — the great used-EV anxiety — is structurally solved: you never own the degradation, you rent the pack. NIO's software team also has a real record of listening to owners and shipping fixes. As a machine, the ES6 is one of the best cars in this cluster.

What's actually wrong. Now the part that matters more than the car. In September 2026, NIO confirmed it has shut its directly-run European operations and handed Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden to local distributors, running sales from China. Six NIOs were registered in Germany in the first two months of 2026. The Hamburg flagship Nio House closed. The European swap-station rollout is, in the industry's words, "close to frozen" at around sixty stations. EU owners spent early 2026 complaining about software delays and after-sales support, loudly enough that CEO William Li flew over to face them personally. An executive VP has publicly admitted "fundamental miscalculations" — cars too big for Europe, costs underestimated. The company pledges warranties and parts will continue, and I believe they mean it; I also believe a pledge is not a network. Add the 31% EU import duty strangling new-car pricing, and a naming saga (ES6 → EL7 → EL6) that will confuse every future buyer and mechanic. In China, none of this applies — support there is superb. Skip it in Europe if you need a dealer within an hour, you want the swap network to grow, or you're paying anything close to list price. In China, skip nothing — just buy it.

The social pulse. Two completely different conversations. In China: a big, active, mostly happy owner base that treats swap stations like petrol stations and argues about trim levels. In Europe: a tiny, outspoken owner community (under 200 advisory-board members continent-wide) that feels like beta testers for a launch that stalled — loyal to the product, furious at the company. The press has moved from "NIO's European dream" to "NIO's European retreat" in eighteen months. No astroturf; the hype died on its own.

The value call. New EL6 from €53,500 without battery (plus ~€289/month battery rental) — uncompetitive against a Model Y once you add the duty-bloated pricing and the support risk. Used is the only sane European play: these are old-stock cars from a retreating brand, and they should be priced like it. Nearest alternatives: XPeng G6 (better charging, worse ADAS), Tesla Model Y (boring, safe, supported), and in China the Li L9 for family buyers. Sweet-spot year: 2023 — the second-gen NT 2.0 car, the first modern ES6, now old enough to be discounted hard in Europe and proven in China. Skip 2018–2022 first-gen cars — obsolete platform, brutal depreciation (NIO's own 2023 launch cannibalized them overnight, and the ES7-owner revolt proved the pattern). Skip 2025+ EU cars — near-new money for a brand in managed retreat with a frozen swap network is the worst trade in this cluster.

The ES6 is a eulogy and a bargain in the same car. In China, buy with confidence. In Europe, buy only at a price that assumes you're on your own — because increasingly, you are.
