Mini Countryman — Research File (September 2026)

What the car is

Third-generation Countryman (U25), launched 2024 — now built in Leipzig on BMW's FAAR platform (X1/X2 sibling), 4.45 m, and for the first time with a proper electric option alongside ICE. Electric: E (FWD, ~204 hp) and SE ALL4 (dual motor, 230 kW/308 hp, 364 lb-ft, 0–60 in 5.4 s, 64.6 kWh; 2026 update adds a silicon-carbide inverter and 65.2 kWh pack — WLTP range up to 467 km SE / 501 km E; EPA 212 mi; 130 kW DC, 10–80% ~30 min). US price: SE ALL4 from $45,200. ICE: Countryman C (1.5), S ALL4 (2.0, 218 hp), JCW ALL4 (300 hp), 7-speed DCT. The 2017–2023 second gen (F60) continues on the used market. Not sold in China.

Social-first owner evidence

Facebook groups: "MINI Cooper (USA)" (616 members) and generic MINI groups surfaced; no dedicated new-Countryman owner group — disclosed gap. Owner/outlet evidence:

  • Edmunds (2025 JCW owner, Aug 2026): "Worst $51k I've ever spent on a new car" — month 1: pedal non-response ("almost got t-boned"), touchscreen freezing, brakes not releasing, ADAS randomly toggling; dealers said "as designed", faults never stored; later: transmission stopped shifting, AC failed, engine shut down; Mini refused buyback. (Note: the "Month 25" timeline in an August 2026 review of a 2025 car is inconsistent — treat the chronology as UNVERIFIED, the symptom list as one owner's report.)
  • Edmunds (2025 S owner, Mar 2026): "feels like a boat", no spare tire, disappointed vs the brand's go-kart promise.
  • Edmunds (2025 S owner, Oct 2025): positive — "solidly built... plenty of power... rides smoothly and handles well"; infotainment "steep learning curve".
  • carscounsel.com: 2019–2024 (late F60) are the "best late-generation choice" — mature B38/B48 engines; 2025 redesign "too new to judge".
  • NHTSA recalls: 24V104000 (2025 Countryman, part of 266,716 BMW/MINI/Rolls vehicles) — integrated brake system can lose power brake assist / ABS / DSC; dealers replace the unit. Plus a 9-vehicle airbag/armrest recall (24V340000).
  • carscounsel/carinterior buying guides: common faults — infotainment freezing (OS 8/9), HVAC blend-door actuators, cold-start transmission hesitation; EVs depend heavily on software stability.
  • Autoblog (2026 SE review): "the range problem" — 212 mi EPA at $45k+ is the car's biggest weakness; but "the vast majority of EVs... are appliances... the Countryman SE... actually makes me want to drive."

Reliability record

Gen 3 too new for pattern data; the early signal is software/electronics (OS 9 freezes) plus one serious brake-system recall. The BMW B-series ICE engines and the shared EV drivetrain are proven hardware. Gen 2 (F60) 2019–2024 is the known-quantity used buy. No battery degradation pattern on the EV.

Support reality

4-year/50,000-mile US warranty; 3-year terms in some markets (UNVERIFIED). BMW/MINI dealer network is strong; software updates should calm OS 9 issues. The brake recall is a must-verify on any 2025. Independent BMW specialists cover out-of-warranty cars well.

Hype flags

Mini's "go-kart feeling" marketing meets a 2-tonne crossover — several owners note the mismatch. The Edmunds JCW horror story is a single owner with inconsistent dates; it reads as genuine frustration but isn't a pattern. The 2026 SiC-inverter range bump is real but modest (+~35 km).

Model-year timeline 2021–2026

| Year | Generation & changes | Reliability notes | Recalls/TSBs | Used-price band | | 2021 | Gen 2 (F60) carryover | Mature; B38/B48 solid | None major | $18,000–26,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2022 | Gen 2 carryover | Mature | None major | $20,000–28,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2023 | Gen 2 final year | Best of gen 2 | None major | $22,000–30,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2024 | Gen 3 (U25) launch; E + SE ALL4 EV, C/S/JCW ICE | First-year OS 9 freezes; brake recall | 24V104000 (brake); 24V340000 (airbag, 9 cars) | Gen 2: $20,000–28,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2025 | Gen 3 full year | Same electronic niggles; one severe owner lemon report | Brake recall remedy rollout | $35,000–48,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2026 | SiC inverter + bigger pack (EV); +35 km range | Too new for data | None documented | New only |

Sweet-spot year: 2023 (gen 2) — the proven, reliable Countryman at used prices; or 2026 (gen 3 EV) with the range fix if buying new. Years to avoid: 2024–2025 gen-3 launch cars until the brake recall is verified complete and OS 9 matures.

Raw quotes

  • "Worst $51k I've ever spent on a new car... Month 1: issues with pedal response, push gas and no response, almost got t-boned several times... Mini refused to buy back. Avoid this car at all costs." — Edmunds owner review, 2025 JCW (chronology UNVERIFIED)
  • "The Countryman SE ALL4 has an EPA-estimated range of just 212 miles from its roughly 65-kWh battery. That's not particularly impressive in today's EV market... Still, range remains the Countryman's biggest weakness." — Autoblog, 2026
  • "I consider the vast majority of EVs sold in America to be appliances... The Countryman SE hasn't given me that problem." — Autoblog, 2026
  • "The 2019 through 2024 model years represent the most mature and dependable versions of the second-generation Countryman." — carscounsel.com
  • "BMW is recalling certain 2023-2025 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles... The integrated brake 'IB' system may malfunction and result in a loss of power brake assist." — NHTSA 24V104000, via Justia
