Li Auto L9 — Research File (September 2026)
What the car is (September 2026)
Full-size 6-seat luxury EREV (extended-range EV) SUV — Li Auto's flagship "family fortress." A 1.5T petrol engine acts purely as a generator (no mechanical drive connection); electric motors do all the driving. Gen 1 launched June 2022: 44.5 kWh battery, 408 hp, ~215 km CLTC pure-electric range, ~1,315 km combined, 5,218 mm long. All-new L9 launched 2025/2026 (Ultra and Livis editions, deliveries from May 2026 in China): third-gen EREV powertrain, ~350 km WLTC / 420 km CLTC pure-electric range, up to 1,650 km combined, 800V active suspension, steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering, 29-inch panoramic screen, Snapdragon 8797 cockpit. An "International Exclusive Version" rolls out from Q3 2026 starting in Central Asia (Uzbekistan launched July 2026), the Middle East, and selected markets — NOT the EU, UK, or US, where the car exists only as grey imports. China price: gen 1 launched at 459,800 RMB; new-gen from ~409,800 RMB (UNVERIFIED exact figure).
Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)
China owner sentiment is strongly positive — the L9 is consistently described as the best family road-trip vehicle in its class, with owners praising serenity, the fridge, the rear entertainment screens, and genuine 1,000+ km touring ability. Western accessible evidence is thinner: Philippines market reviews (Autodeal: ride comfort 5/5, tech 5/5), European YouTube technical documentaries, expat/grey-import owner chatter. Public Facebook owner groups exist but are closed to non-owners; Chinese-platform owner communities are inaccessible by design. Threads/Instagram yielded nothing substantive through accessible tools.
What owners praise: ride comfort and cabin quietness (the standout); family packaging — 6 proper seats, heated/ventilated/massaging, rear screens, the famous hot/cold fridge; EREV flexibility (daily electric, long-trip petrol backup); intuitive ADAS; value vs German luxury flagships (Li Xiang's famous "best SUV under 5M yuan" boast).
What they complain about:
- Quality wobbles, handled bluntly by the company. July 2022: an L9 broke its front suspension over a pothole at 90 km/h during a test drive (trial-vehicle part; Li Auto extended air-spring warranty to 8 yrs/160,000 km). Late 2025: owners of 2025 L-series EREVs (incl. L9) reported abnormal front-wheel noises shortly after delivery; Li Auto fired multiple employees over quality failures, replaced parts — but offered no compensation, sparking owner dissatisfaction (cnevpost, Nov 2025).
- No CarPlay/Android Auto (flagged in Philippines review); almost zero physical controls.
- Brand-level overhang: the late-2025 Mega MPV coolant recall (11,411 cars, after a fire) and Li Auto's first quarterly loss since 2022 dented confidence in the brand's quality narrative — not L9-specific, but it colors resale and trust.
- Size: 5.2 meters of SUV is a lot of car outside China.
Community flavor: in China, a devoted family-buyer community; the brand's aggressive internal response to quality failures (firings, public memos) reads as accountability to some, instability to others.
Reliability record
Mixed but improving. The EREV powertrain itself (1.5T generator + dual motors) has no widespread failure pattern; battery/motor hardware is conventional. The issues are chassis-adjacent: the 2022 suspension-buffer incident (resolved via stronger parts + extended warranty) and the 2025 front-wheel noise episode across the L series. Software/OTA is a strength in China. No formal reliability statistics in any export market; in China, Li Auto consistently ranks well in domestic quality surveys but the 2025 quality episode is fresh.
Support reality
Grey-import/support risk outside China — the cluster's sharpest warning. The L9 has NO official presence in the EU, UK, or US. Cars in Europe arrive via unofficial grey importers: no factory warranty, no guaranteed OTA updates (China-account-bound services), no parts pipeline, no homologation support, and the Yandex/localization stack in export versions is built for Central Asia — not Europe. If the range-extender needs work, you're shipping parts from China or relying on the importer's goodwill. The Q3 2026 "International Exclusive Version" covers Central Asia/Middle East/selected markets with localized apps and charging — still not the EU. In China, support is excellent (dense service network, mobile service, strong warranty). Buying a grey-import L9 in Europe is buying a great car with no safety net — price it accordingly, and understand resale will be to an even smaller pool of risk-tolerant buyers.
Hype flags
Li Xiang's "best family SUV under 5 million yuan" launch boast is founder hype that the product mostly lived up to. Western YouTube documentaries ("China's Alien Suspension That Defied Physics") are enthusiastic but tech-demo framing, not ownership evidence. The Uzbekistan/Central Asia rollout press (syndicated lifestyle outlets) is PR-wire material. No evidence of astroturfed owner reviews; the China owner love looks organic.
Model-year timeline 2021–2026

Sweet-spot year: 2026 (all-new L9) in China — why: third-gen EREV, 800V active suspension, steer-by-wire, much-improved dynamics, and the 2025 quality episode forced manufacturing discipline. For grey-import buyers: there is no sweet spot — only risk tolerance. Years to skip: 2022 — why: first-year car, suspension-buffer incident era, and the earliest (least mature) software. 2025 (first-year new-gen) — mild caution: front-wheel noise episode and brand quality turbulence; the 2026 cars are the debugged ones.
