Kia EV9 — research (September 2026)
Slug: kia-ev9 | Powertrain: EV | Launch: late 2023 (as 2024 model; Korea/EU mid-2023)
What the car is (September 2026)
Kia's flagship 3-row electric SUV on the 800V E-GMP platform — the most expensive Kia ever sold, NACTOY 2024 Truck of the Year, Edmunds "Best of the Best 2024." 6 or 7 seats (swiveling 180° second-row captain's chairs), 5,000 lb tow, up to 81.7 cu ft cargo. Batteries: 76.1 kWh (Light SR, 215 hp RWD, 230 mi) or 99.8 kWh (everything else: Light LR 201 hp RWD/305 mi; Wind, Land, GT-Line 379 hp AWD, 270–283 mi). DC fast charging at up to 350 kW (10–80% in ~24 min), V2H bidirectional capability. Built in Gwangju, Korea and West Point, Georgia (US builds from 2025+ qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit).
2026 lineup (excl. $1,495 destination): Light SR $54,900, Light LR $57,900 (cut $2k vs 2025), Wind AWD $63,900, Land AWD $68,900 (cut $1k), GT-Line AWD $71,900 (cut $2k). New for 2026: standard native NACS port across all trims, Nightfall Edition package on Land (+$1,500, Roadrider Brown, Boost torque to 516 lb-ft), Terrain Mode on AWD, small range bumps. As of September 2026, a $10,000 Kia Bonus Cash incentive is being reported on new units — effectively stacking with the federal credit. Availability: US, Canada, Korea, Europe. Not sold in China.
Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)
"Kia EV9 Owners USA" (19,000 members) is the highest-signal source in this cluster — thick with real ownership texture, not brand cheerleading. The dominant arc: Tesla defectors who are delighted by the car and annoyed by everything around it.
The love is consistent: space, comfort, range, and the "I switched from a Model Y and I'm not going back" conversion posts. One owner: "New EV9 owner — Who else made the switch from Tesla to EV9? So far, I love the car!" A four-month 2026 Wind owner lists the real wins: Kia Access app with remote start and charging schedules, comfortable cabin, 300+ miles in Eco mode. Real-world range is the recurring debate: a 2026 GT-Line owner reports ~220 mi on highway legs despite the car projecting ~340 — "Never been close to that. Wonder if it's our battery, driving mode, or what most people experience too?" The group's answer is consistent: it's the highway and the boost mode, not your battery.
The complaints thread is where the honesty lives:
- Dealerships. The single most repeated non-car complaint. @jill.dehlin (Threads): "The 3yr lease on my Kia EV9 is up on 3/28/27. I am thinking about a PHEV or a hybrid next, but not a Kia because I despise my local dealership." A Wind owner: "The dealer did a very poor job instructing a new EV user on all the electronics and options."
- Depreciation. A group post linking a September 2026 discounts article sums it up: "The deals are out there. Too bad trade in values are so poor for anyone that has one." The "Buy or Bye" YouTube teardown (129 days ago) pegged it: $74k new, ~$29k used — 47% depreciation in two years.
- Early-build quality gremlins. A 2024 Land owner at 13,500 miles: "Welp, folks. Looks like it happened to me too. Critical error code and now in the shop. Will be a few days before I hear anything... Did everything by the book too and still had issues. Just happy I leased." A 2026 owner bought 8/23/26, and by 9/1 the car was stuck at the dealer with a VDDM module replaced and charging faults still unresolved. The tire story is its own subplot: "No more tire wobble, thrum or vibration!" (127 reactions), and a 2024 GT-Line owner: "Not a fan of the hankook evos, especially in rainy weather."
- Niggles: slow home charging confusion (3.8 kW on an underpowered circuit), utility-mode UI weirdness, sloppy cupholders, bouncy ride on the Wind.
Threads sentiment is thinner and grumpier ("Do not buy a KIA do not buy a KIA do not buy a KIA") — dealership trauma, not car hatred. Instagram: not meaningfully searchable via available tools — no claims made.
Popularity: qualitative — the darling of the EV family-hauler crowd, genuine conquest vehicle from Tesla, but mainstream buyers mostly discover it through lease ads and discount headlines.
Reliability record
Mixed but improving; the recall list is long for a three-year-old model:
- Missing seat-bolt recall (2024–2025, 22,883 cars, Kia SC239 / NHTSA 24V-962, Dec 2024): second/third-row seats possibly missing mounting fasteners — an assembly-line error at one plant.
- Blank instrument cluster (2024–2025, 14,163 cars, Kia SC326): an August OTA update introduced a software logic error that could blank the speedometer/turn-signal displays; fixed by another OTA.
- Remote parking system recall: ~12,400 models with the optional feature (per greencarreports).
- Fire-risk battery defect (NHTSA 26V431, Kia SC375, July 2026): SK On battery modules with misaligned electrodes, potential short circuit and thermal runaway; affected EV9 population is tiny (one 2024 EV9 identified), owners told to keep charge under 80% and park outside until the battery assembly is replaced. Linked to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 / EV6 twin recall.
- Passenger airbag ODS recall (2025–2026 Georgia-built, 21,290 cars, Kia SC379 / NHTSA 26V545, Aug 2026): pinched ODS tube may fail to detect a child in the front seat; ~6% estimated actual defect rate; letters from Oct 2026.
- ICCU / 12V failures: owner-reported 12V battery short life and ICCU (integrated charging control unit) failures are discussed in owner circles and flagged under NHTSA investigation per press teardown; formal EV9-specific recall coverage is UNVERIFIED.
- Tire vibration/wobble/thrum: owner-reported (resolved by tire replacement in the celebrated group post); formal TSB status UNVERIFIED.
- Counterbalance: the E-GMP powertrain itself is proven (Ioniq 5/EV6 lineage), and 2026 builds benefit from Georgia production maturity, price cuts, and standard NACS.
Support reality
Kia's dealer network is wide but uneven for EVs — the #1 owner complaint is dealer EV ignorance, not parts availability. Warranty is the segment's best headline: 5 yr/60k basic, 10 yr/100k powertrain and battery. OTA updates work (they also caused the cluster recall). The federal tax credit plus $10k Bonus Cash makes new pricing aggressive, which props up new-buyer support but crushes used values. Long-term parts support is a non-issue (Kia scale), unlike startup competitors.
Hype flags
- "Most awarded EV" marketing is real (NACTOY, Edmunds) but doesn't survive contact with the depreciation curve — awards don't hold residuals.
- The $10k Bonus Cash + $7,500 credit stack makes new prices look amazing; strip the incentives and it's a $54–72k Kia, and the used market prices it accordingly.
- EV9 GT (501 hp) revealed at LA Auto Show 2024 but production "indefinitely delayed" — vaporware-adjacent; don't buy on its promise.
- YouTube/press reviews are uniformly glowing; owner forums are where the dealership and gremlin stories live. Read both.
Model-year timeline 2021–2026
| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | Did not exist | — | — | — | — | | 2022 | Did not exist (revealed as concept lineage) | — | — | — | — | | 2023 | Global launch (Korea/EU mid-2023); US launch late 2023 as 2024 MY | 76.1 / 99.8 kWh E-GMP; 215–379 hp | Launch builds | — | — | | 2024 | First full US model year; Korea + early Georgia builds | Light SR 215 hp/230 mi; Light LR 201 hp/304 mi; Wind/Land/GT-Line 379 hp/270–280 mi | First-year gremlins: owner-reported tire vibration, critical error codes, charging faults | Seat-bolt recall 22,883 (Dec 2024); cluster-blank OTA issue | ~$29k avg (KBB via YouTube, 47% depreciation in 2 yrs); range $29.3k–42.8k | | 2025 | US production consolidated at West Point GA (tax-credit eligible) | Same, minor carryover | Maturing; Georgia-built cars carry the later ODS recall | Cluster recall 14,163 (Aug 2025, OTA); remote-parking recall ~12,400 | UNVERIFIED (US avg) | | 2026 | Price cuts ($1–2k); Nightfall Edition; standard NACS; Terrain Mode; range bumps (LLR 305, Wind/Land 283, GT-Line 280); GT still delayed | Same packs/motors | Improved; $10k Bonus Cash + $7,500 credit stack | Battery fire-risk (26V431, tiny pop.); ODS airbag recall 21,290 (Georgia-built 2025–26) | New: $54,900–71,900 MSRP (+$1,495 dest) |
Sweet-spot year: 2026 — standard NACS, price cuts, range bumps, and the $10k Bonus Cash plus $7,500 federal credit can put a Wind AWD in the mid-$40s effective; the car is mature by now. Budget play: a used 2024 Wind/Land in the low $30s only if the seat-bolt and cluster recalls are documented cleared and the battery/12V check out — the depreciation is your discount for first-year risk. Years to skip: 2024 early builds if buying at 2024-era pricing — they carry the seat-bolt recall, the cluster-blank OTA bug, and the tire-vibration complaints; fine as a cheap used buy, never at launch prices. Verify any Georgia-built 2025/2026 against the ODS airbag recall before purchase.
