Geely EX5 — Research File (September 2026)

What the car is (September 2026)

Mid-size 5-seat electric SUV — Geely's global export flagship, sold in China as the Galaxy E5 since August 2024 (107,800–179,800 yuan; the domestic price that embarrasses every Western list price) and as EX5 in ~30 export markets from 2025: Australia (from A$40,990, March 2025), the UK (from £31,990, Oct 2025), Greece, Brazil, New Zealand, and six Adriatic countries. Built on Geely's GEA new-energy architecture: single 160 kW (215 hp) front motor, 60.2 kWh LFP "short blade" battery, 430 km WLTP (530 km CLTC; 49.52 kWh/440 km CLTC base version in China). A 68.39 kWh long-range variant (610 km CLTC) joined in China in 2025. 5-star Euro NCAP, 5-star ANCAP, 8-year battery warranty, V2L, heat pump. Not sold in the US.

Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)

Press-heavy, owner-light. The EX5 has enthusiastic Australian/UK press coverage and a growing early-owner base (Australia from March 2025, UK from Oct 2025), but genuine multi-year owner evidence doesn't exist yet — the car is barely a year old outside China, and China-platform evidence is inaccessible. EU/European owner forums are thin; no documented public Facebook owner-group signal through accessible tools.

What owners/early reviewers praise: staggering equipment for the money — heated, ventilated AND massaging front seats on a sub-A$50k EV, plush seats, quiet cabin, big boot (571 L), heat pump, V2L; strong safety credentials; Geely's LFP battery durability claim (99% capacity retention after 180,000 km — company claim, UNVERIFIED); 8-year battery warranty.

What they complain about:

  1. The nannying. The single most repeated complaint, almost verbatim everywhere: over-sensitive driver-attention monitoring ("so hopped-up on red cordial you dare not blink lest it starts bonging at you," EV Central) plus overspeed squawks and mystery bing-bongs. Geely pushed a 2026 OTA update specifically addressing this — adding one-touch driver-assist profiles — based on global owner feedback.
  2. Touchscreen everything. Over-complicated infotainment menus, heavy reliance on touch for basics, weak built-in navigation (The Car Expert UK: "over-complicated and relies heavily on touchscreen menus"; Ray Massey: "'nanny' the driver with warnings... control-freakery tendency"). Wireless Android Auto/CarPlay arrived only via the 2026 OTA.
  3. Bland dynamics / modest range. Reviewers split: some find it comfortable and composed, others (JoeTalksCars video review, 276 days ago) call the Max "genuinely shocked by how bad it is" to drive — poor steering calibration, UI annoyances, deal-breaker details vs rivals. Thecarexpert UK gives below-average media scores: "If you're buying a car primarily to drive for pleasure, look elsewhere."
  4. Missing tech at launch: no sentry mode, no dash cam, no wireless phone mirroring initially — promised via OTA (some delivered in 2026).

Community flavor: early-adopter bargain hunters rather than brand loyalists. Australian owners engage constructively (Geely Australia runs a connected-services portal and acted on feedback via OTA); YouTube debate is polarized between "king of value" and "everything I hate about new cars."

Reliability record

No widespread mechanical failure pattern documented — but that's a statement about youth, not proven durability. No recalls found in any export market. The 160 kW motor + LFP battery is a conventional, low-complexity setup; the LFP longevity claim is plausible chemistry-wise but UNVERIFIED as an EX5-specific figure. Software is the entire reliability story: the 2026 OTA fixed the worst complaints, which is encouraging (OTA capability actually works, installed at home over Wi-Fi) and damning (the car shipped half-baked).

Support reality

Decent and improving. Australia: Geely has a growing dealer network (22+ locations at launch, east-coast concentrated) and real OTA infrastructure. UK: Geely Auto UK with an 8-year warranty, engineering tuned in Coventry with Lotus input — a serious launch, not a flag-drop. Greece/Adriatic: small distributor networks (GEO Mobility Hellas). No evidence of the distributor-collapse pattern that hit sister brand Lynk & Co in some markets. Resale: unproven; The Car Expert UK explicitly flags residual values as unproven. No used-market data yet.

Hype flags

The press line is heavily value-framed ("king of value-packed premium family electric SUV," The Driven) and Geely's million-kilometer battery claim plus design awards (IDA Gold, MUSE Platinum, Red Dot) are company/PR material. The "90-degree steering sideways driving" demo (Dec 2025) is tech-showcase PR with no production timeline — do not confuse it with the product. Delivery/sales figures (150,000+ Galaxy E5 in China by Aug 2025) come from China EV DataTracker — credible but China-sourced. No astroturf detected in owner evidence, but the owner base is too young for the usual organic complaints to have fully surfaced.

Model-year timeline 2021–2026

| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | — (model didn't exist) | — | — | — | — | | 2022 | — | — | — | — | — | | 2023 | — | — | — | — | — | | 2024 | Galaxy E5 launched China (Aug) | 160 kW FWD; 49.52 kWh (440 km CLTC) / 60.22 kWh (530 km CLTC) | First-year China cars; China-only signal inaccessible | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2025 | Export wave: Australia (March, A$40,990), Greece (June), UK (Oct, £31,990), Brazil/NZ/Adriatic; 68.39 kWh long-range variant (610 km CLTC, China, May); 5-star Euro NCAP + ANCAP | Larger battery option in China; export gets 60.2 kWh / 430 km WLTP | Nannying complaints peak; OTA program begins addressing them | None documented | UNVERIFIED (no used market yet) | | 2026 | 2026 OTA: bing-bong fix, wireless Android Auto/CarPlay, drive-mode presets, AVAS sound choices; updated China model rumored with larger battery | Software-defined updates; no hardware change confirmed for export (UNVERIFIED) | Too new for long-term data | None documented | UNVERIFIED |

Sweet-spot year: 2025 (export cars) — why: post-launch software, 5-star safety coverage, 8-year battery warranty, and the OTA pipeline is proven working. Years to skip: 2024 (China-only first-year cars) — mild caution: earliest calibration, pre-OTA infotainment, and no export-market backing. For export buyers there are no older cars to avoid — the 2025 launch IS the start.

Raw quotes
