GAC Aion Y — Research File (September 2026)
What the car is (September 2026)
Compact electric crossover SUV from GAC Aion (GAC Group's EV arm). Launched in China in 2021; facelifted as the Aion Y Plus in September 2022 (longer body, +125 mm, +39 L trunk, same 2750 mm wheelbase). FWD, 100–150 kW (134–204 hp) depending on trim; LFP batteries from 37.9 to 68.3 kWh; CLTC ranges from 310 to 610 km. China pricing ran 139,800–179,800 RMB at Y Plus launch (Oct 2022), slashed to a 99,800 RMB entry in March 2024 in the BYD-led price war. Sold domestically plus Southeast Asian exports (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam from 2024; Malaysia CKD assembly). NOT sold in the US or EU. Aion Y was originally designed around the Chinese taxi/private-hire market and later repositioned for family buyers.
Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)
Threads search yielded nothing on the Aion Y. Facebook group search returned no accessible public owner groups via the available tooling. Instagram yielded nothing substantive through accessible tools. The accessible evidence is export-market press and review-site owners:
- Malaysia (Zigwheels, 5 owner reviews, 4.4/5): praise for cabin "living room" feel, pleasant driving demeanor, budget-friendliness; no complaint details visible in snippets.
- Malaysia press (dsf.my, 2024): strong real-world range vs claims; DC charging slow (~80 kW, 20–80% closer to an hour); modest power (225 Nm) fine in town, runs out of breath above ~110 km/h; AC charging weak at ~7 kW.
- Singapore press (Torque, 2024): excellent backseat space, solid build for mass-market money, but exterior design "not my cup of tea", hard plastics, modest performance.
- China market signal: the single most important data point — 213,000 GAC Aion vehicles were found (July 2026, per Autoblog/Sep 2026 industry coverage) to have defective battery cells causing battery swelling, power loss and failures. It is NOT documented whether the Y is among the affected models — UNVERIFIED for the Y specifically.
- Sales trajectory: China sales peaked at 204,027 (2023), fell to 152,357 (2024) and 72,956 (2025) per Wikipedia sourcing — the model is in steep decline at home as GAC pivots to newer Aion models (V, RT, UT).
Reliability record
No formal reliability ratings in any export market. No documented Aion Y-specific failure pattern found in accessible sources. The battery-batch scandal (battery swelling, power loss, failures across 213,000 GAC Aion vehicles reported July 2026) is a line-wide risk that must be flagged; attribution to the Y is UNVERIFIED. Drivetrain simplicity (single FWD motor, LFP) suggests mechanical durability, but there is no long-term export dataset to lean on — Tier 3 by design.
Support reality
China: mature dealer/service network (GAC Aion has its own store network). SE Asia: official presence — Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia (CKD), Vietnam launch Oct 2024 with Aion ES. EU/UK/US: no presence whatsoever — parts, service documentation and warranty do not exist outside China/SEA. An imported example would be a pure orphan.
Hype flags
Low hype. It is a taxi-fleet-derived value car, not a marketed aspirational product. The 2024 price cut to 99,800 RMB made it China's budget-BEV price-setter, which is honest value positioning, not hype. The battery-batch scandal is the real story of 2026 — and the quiet part is how little GAC has said publicly (UNVERIFIED whether a formal Y recall exists).
Model-year timeline 2021–2026
| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | Launch (Aion Y), China | 63.2 kWh (490 km NEDC) / 68.3 kWh (550 km); 135–160 kW | First-year cars; no export data; taxi-heavy early use | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2022 | Aion Y Plus facelift (Sep 2022) | New 100 kW base motor; 51.9 kWh LFP (430 km); +125 mm length, bigger trunk | Facelift year; taxi-to-family repositioning begins | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2023 | Y Plus, China price war begins | 2023 trims 139,800–179,800 RMB; 510/610 km options | Peak China sales year (204k); no failure pattern surfaced | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2024 | Entry price slashed to 99,800 RMB (Mar 2024); SEA exports begin | New 37.9 kWh / 310 km budget trim; Vietnam launch Oct 2024 | Malaysia/Singapore press reviews positive on value | None documented | UNVERIFIED (MY new ~RM 119,800–135,800) | | 2025 | Carryover; China sales collapsing (73k) | No hardware change documented | Model aging; replaced in buyer interest by newer Aion models | None documented | UNVERIFIED | | 2026 | Unchanged | No changes documented | Battery-batch scandal (Jul 2026, 213k Aion vehicles affected) — Y inclusion UNVERIFIED | None documented for Y | UNVERIFIED |
Sweet-spot year: 2023 — why: post-facelift Y Plus with mature trim range and the widest battery options, peak production year (more parts and cars around), before the model slid into decline and before the 2026 battery-batch controversy. Years to skip: none with a documented failure pattern — but treat 2026 purchases cautiously until GAC clarifies which models carry the defective battery batch (UNVERIFIED); and 2021 first-year cars are unknown quantities outside China.
