Ford Mustang — research package (Sept 2026)
What the car is (September 2026)
America's surviving pony car: sixth-gen S550 (2021–2023) gave way to seventh-gen S650 (2024–present). S650 lineup: 2.3L EcoBoost I4 (315 hp / 350 lb-ft, 10-speed auto only), 5.0L Coyote V8 GT (480–486 hp / 415–418 lb-ft, 6MT or 10AT), Dark Horse (500 hp / 418 lb-ft), plus the new 2026 Dark Horse SC (supercharged 5.2L, 795 hp / 660 lb-ft, 7-speed DCT) and the $328k GTD halo. Rear-wheel drive only, fastback or soft-top convertible. 2026 US pricing: EcoBoost $32,320; EcoBoost Premium $36,345; GT $46,560; GT Premium $51,080; Dark Horse $64,080; Dark Horse Premium $69,075 (all excl. destination; Magnesium Framed Display demoted to a $1,000 option on Premiums for 2026). Still officially sold in Europe (V8 GT, RHD in the UK) and Australia (~AUD 75k+ drive-away for 2024 GT), with Europe/Australia pricing at import premiums; China pricing UNVERIFIED (2.3L historically sold there, not confirmed from my sources).
Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)
Facebook: Large owner groups located ("94-98 Mustang Owner & Lovers" 55k; Explorer/ST equivalents noted separately), but the groups-posts API returned zero posts for the groups I queried — membership gating means no direct post content was accessible. No claim made from Facebook post content.
Threads: Thin and off-target. Queries for "Ford Mustang owner review" returned mostly Mach-E content (e.g. @danthewheelman, Sept 2026: Mach-E GT "morphed into one of the best EVs money can buy") plus an Indonesian for-sale ad for a 2017 GT 5.0. A "Mustang GT 5.0 S650 owner problems" query returned two posts, neither substantive. No owner-review claim made from Threads.
Instagram: Not searchable for owner content via my tools — no claim made from Instagram.
Forums/press (web-indexed): r/Mustang and owner-advocacy channels are the richest veins. The S650's owner sentiment splits by generation: S550 loyalists rate 2021–2023 cars 4.78–5/5 on CarGurus; S650 owners debate touchscreen-only climate, infotainment freezes, and the electronic rotary shifter, while defending the Coyote/6MT combination. A viral owner-focused YouTube breakdown (Sept 2026) catalogs the 10R80 10-speed's internal bushing redesign (2023), Coyote 2018–2020 oil-consumption TSB, and EcoBoost carbon buildup — treat its scarier cost figures ($8,000 intake-manifold failure claim) as advocacy-tone, not verified.
Qualitative pulse: Enormously loved as an icon; argued about by generation. The S550 (2021–2023) is treated as the safe, sorted buy; the S650 (2024+) as the better car wrapped in more electronics and a growing recall list.
Reliability record
- S650 launch-year dip: J.D. Power quality/reliability 79/100 for 2024 (Average), rebounding to 85 (Great) for 2025–2026 (Autoblog, Sept 2026). Consumer Reports: 2024 dipped, 2025 improved; 2026 trails BMW 2/4 Series and GR86/BRZ.
- 2026 grounding-harness recall (~148,663 US; 7,724 Australia): excess heat-shrink on a wiring-harness grounding eyelet (built Mar 2023–May 2026) can cause loss of drive power, headlight or cooling-fan malfunction. Only 8 warranty claims identified; fix announced Sept 2026. 2024-model-year cars now carry 12 total recalls (Autoblog).
- Body-control-module water intrusion recall (~105,000, 2024–2025): improperly sealed seams → taillight/marker-light flicker or failure; 69 claims, 17 field reports (autoevolution, Aug 2025).
- Wiper/washer recall (2026): washers inoperable, wipers high-speed only (~4,955 cars Australia; Ford Australia, Sept 2026).
- Electronic parking brake recall (built Oct 2022–Feb 2024): software defect trapping brakes.
- Infotainment freezes + rough low-speed 10AT shifting: the two most common owner complaints on S650 (Autoblog).
- S550 carryover concerns (2021–2023): Coyote oil consumption (2018–2020 TSB — >1 qt/3,000 mi; 2023 class-action filing reported, verify before purchase); 10R80 rough/hesitant shifting complaints; Ford quietly redesigned the 10R80's internal bushing in 2023.
- EcoBoost: carbon buildup on intake valves (direct injection, no port cleaning) — walnut-blast maintenance past ~60k mi.
Support reality
- Ford warranty: 3 yr/36k basic, 5 yr/60k powertrain — standard.
- Ford led the industry in total recalls in 2025–2026; dealer capacity is the support bottleneck — owners report multi-week waits for recall remedies across the Ford lineup (documented in the Lightning file; same dealer network).
- The Dark Horse SC's supercharger kit recall (1,048 Ford Performance Whipple kits, unintended-acceleration software concern) shows even factory accessories aren't exempt.
- DIY support is excellent: enormous aftermarket, r/Mustang, forums; but OTA updates have wiped custom tunes overnight on S650 cars — tuners advise caution.
Hype flags
- None on paid hype — no ad-spend evidence found; transaction prices near MSRP with 2025 deals only as 2026s arrive. The risk is inverse: generational tribalism. S550 loyalists under-weight the S650's real tech improvements; S650 boosters under-weight the 12-recall first-year reality. Both readings survive in the file.
Model-year timeline 2021–2026
| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | S550 carryover; Mach 1 (480 hp) joins | GT 460 hp 5.0L; EcoBoost 310 hp; 6MT/10AT | Solid late-S550; carries 10R80 shift complaints | Scattered (rear camera, etc.) | UNVERIFIED (~$30–33k range) | | 2022 | S550; final GT500 (760 hp supercharged 5.2L) | Same; GT500 bows out after this year | Same as 2021; electronic parking-brake recall population begins (Oct 2022 builds) | Parking-brake software (early builds) | ~$34,234 avg; 4.78/5 owner rating | | 2023 | Final S550 year; Mach 1 last year | Same; 10R80 internal bushing redesigned mid-run | Best S550 year on record; complaints thinning | Few | ~$33,131 avg; 5/5 owner rating | | 2024 | S650 launch | EcoBoost 315 hp (auto only); GT 480–486 hp 4th-gen Coyote; Dark Horse 500 hp; 12.4"+13.2" digital cockpit | Launch-year dip: infotainment freezes, rough 10AT low-speed shifting | 12 recalls incl. BCM water intrusion, parking brake, grounding harness | ~$38,493 avg; 4.75/5 owner rating | | 2025 | Carryover; minor changes | Same | Improved (J.D. Power 85); owner satisfaction rebounds | Fewer; carried-over campaigns | ~$44,135 avg; 5/5 owner rating | | 2026 | +Dark Horse SC (795 hp supercharged 5.2L, DCT, ~$170k rumored — UNVERIFIED); GTD halo | Same base range | Too early; recall count includes new wiper + grounding campaigns | Grounding-harness (~148.7k US), wipers | New: $32,320–$69,075 (+ dest) |
Sweet-spot year: 2023 — final S550 year with the sorted platform, the redesigned 10R80 bushing landing mid-run, a 5/5 CarGurus owner rating, and ~$33k average asking. It's the enthusiast-consensus "buy the last of the old one" pick. Years to skip: 2024 (S650 launch year: 12 recalls, infotainment and transmission niggles, sits inside the grounding-harness recall population). 2021 is fine mechanically but priced close to 2022s with no advantage.
Raw quotes
- Threads, @danthewheelman, Sept 2026 (on Mach-E, not the coupe — showing what the Mustang query surface actually returns): the Mach-E GT "morphed into one of the best EVs money can buy."
- Threads, @gavin.vargo: "There's just something about a 5.0" — the entire V8 value proposition in six words.
- Autoblog, Sept 2026: 2024 Mustangs "now have 12 total recalls to their name" — "the number of Mustang recalls have gradually declined since the current generation launched."
- Autoblog on S650 complaints: "the most common complaints by Mustang owners have been problems with the in-car electronics, such as infotainment screen freezes, and rough low-speed shifting on the 10-speed automatic transmissions."
- TorqueCafe, Sept 2026: Ford Australia recalling 7,724 S650s (built Mar 2023–May 2026) for the grounding-eyelet defect; "just under 500" dealer-stock cars held under stop-sale.
- CarGurus (July 2026 data): 2022 Mustang 4.78/5 owner rating ("continues to impress with its performance, handling, and styling... especially with the option of a manual transmission"); 2023 and 2025 both 5/5.
- Owner-advocacy YouTube (Sept 2026): on the 10R80 — "the internal bushing Ford quietly redesigned in 2023 after thousands of Mustangs left the factory with a ticking time bomb bolted to their engine" (advocacy tone; treat as one-sided).
- Car and Driver (via dealer site): "recommend taking advantage" of the V8, "pairing it with the 6-speed manual transmission."
