Citroen C4 — Research File (September 2026)
What the car is
Third-generation C4 (C41), launched winter 2020/21 — a raised 5-door hatchback (4.36 m) that split the difference between hatch and SUV. Powertrains: ë-C4 electric (100 kW/136 hp, 50 kWh, ~357 km WLTP; 54 kWh/156 hp version added 2024; 100 kW DC, 20–80% ~25 min); petrol 1.2 PureTech 100/130/136 (wet timing belt); 1.5 BlueHDi diesel. Comfort-first setup (Progressive Hydraulic Cushions), from £19,495 (UK, thecarexpert). Euro NCAP 4 stars (2021). 2025 facelift: new front/rear styling, updated interior. From 2025 Citroën offers a service-activated 8-year/100,000-mile warranty (UK). Not sold in the US or China.
Social-first owner evidence
Facebook groups: public-group search surfaced only unrelated "C4" groups (Corvette, Audi) — no Citroën C4 owner group; disclosed gap. Forum/outlet evidence:
- carchecker.pro (ë-C4): the most significant known issue across Stellantis e-CMP EVs — the Mahle 11 kW onboard charger can fail completely (€2,200 part, up to ~€3,800 fitted and coded; must be dealer-coded, no salvage units). Stellantis extended OBC warranty to 4 years retroactive from April 2021; later cars use a more reliable VMAX charger. Separately: Citroën recalled 8,726 ë-C4/e-Berlingo (campaign NT2; built 3 May 2022–15 March 2023) for a battery-control-unit misconfiguration that can cause sudden loss of propulsion — software fix, free.
- What Car? Reliability Survey: mixed — recurring dashboard warning lights needing multiple dealer visits; charging-system faults with weeks-long parts waits; inconsistent dealer service.
- electricroad.co.uk (owner Mark S, ë-C4 2021): loves the comfort and value; negatives — "the app is shocking", passive-aggressive lane assist, slow auto high-beam; suffered the perishing ABS sensor cable ("many errors and functions that fail... recovered to a dealership").
- parkers.co.uk owner reviews: praise comfort and quietness; gripes — tiny digital dash, no spare wheel, no rear wiper, mpg lower than expected, easily scratched paint.
- thecarexpert/MotorEasy: "poor reliability record" from warranty-claim data — engine problems most common (avg repair >£500); gearbox repairs ~£1,200 but rare. Mostly reflects PureTech ICE cars, where the 1.2 wet timing belt is the known weak point.
Reliability record
The ë-C4's two documented pattern failures (OBC, NT2 propulsion loss) are serious but bounded — both have manufacturer remedies; post-2023 cars with the VMAX charger and applied NT2 update look materially better. ICE versions carry the PureTech wet-belt risk. 12V battery drain when parked and infotainment glitches are recurring niggles. The 2025 facelift is too new for data.
Support reality
Citroën's 8-year/100k service-activated warranty (from 2025) is generous — check eligibility on used cars. OBC warranty extension (4 yr retroactive) helps early ë-C4s. Dealer feedback is polarised: some owners report quick, polite fixes; others report weeks of silence and parts delays. Always test AC charging before buying a used ë-C4 (OBC failure kills all AC charging).
Hype flags
carchecker.pro's repair-cost tables read as modeled estimates rather than observed claims — treat € figures as indicative. "Poor reliability record" from MotorEasy blends all C4 generations and skews ICE.
Model-year timeline 2021–2026
| Year | Generation & changes | Reliability notes | Recalls/TSBs | Used-price band | | 2021 | C4 III launch; ë-C4 50 kWh | Mahle OBC failures begin; 12V drain reports | OBC warranty extended to 4 yr (retroactive Apr 2021) | €12,000–16,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2022 | Carryover | NT2 build window (May 2022–Mar 2023): propulsion-loss risk | NT2 recall: 8,726 cars (software fix) | €13,000–18,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2023 | Carryover | Post-NT2-update cars improve; VMAX charger phased in | NT2 remedy rollout | €14,000–19,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2024 | ë-C4 54 kWh added | Mixed survey results; ABS sensor cable issue noted | None documented | €16,000–22,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2025 | Facelift; 8-yr/100k warranty introduced | Too new for data | None documented | €18,000–26,000 UNVERIFIED | | 2026 | Facelift carryover | No data yet | None documented | New only |
Sweet-spot year: 2024 — post-NT2, VMAX charger, 54 kWh option, most early issues behind it, and before facelift pricing. Years to avoid: 2021–2022 — Mahle OBC failure window and NT2 propulsion-loss build window (only with proof of both fixes).
