Cadillac Optiq — Review

Verdict: an appealing electric crossover that isn't ready to be bought at full price — the software and support record say wait.

There's a version of the Cadillac Optiq that makes complete sense. A distinctive-looking compact electric SUV, 300-plus miles of range, genuinely comfortable ride, Super Cruise for the highway, starting at $50,900. On paper it undercuts the Germans and matches the best of the mainstream electrics. The problem is that paper isn't where you live. You live in the owner's world, where the phone won't integrate properly, the Wi-Fi module has been on backorder for half a year, and the car that was supposed to make you forget about CarPlay just reminds you of it every single day.

Start with the good, because the foundation is decent. An Edmunds owner praised the comfortable ride, the distinctive design, strong acceleration, real interior space, and — notably — real-world range that matched projections. The 2026 lineup's numbers are solid: 315 hp and 317 miles EPA in rear-drive form, 440 hp and 303 miles with all-wheel drive, and a 519-hp Optiq-V for people who want their sensible crossover with a wild side. One Facebook owner chronicled a 2,600-mile round trip where Super Cruise did most of the highway driving — when GM's tech works, it's genuinely good tech.

Now the owner-reported failure modes, because they pile up fast for a car this new. The single most repeated complaint across every source: no Apple CarPlay, no Android Auto. GM's Google Built-in-only policy is the hill the company chose, and owners are not following it up that hill. An Edmunds owner called the phone interface disappointing outright. Then the hardware: a ConsumerAffairs owner reported a failed Wi-Fi module with no replacement ETA after more than six months. Six months. For a connectivity module on a car whose entire pitch is connectivity. That's not a teething problem; that's a parts-pipeline problem, and it's the reddest flag in this file.

The smaller cuts accumulate: no rear wiper, no kick sensor for the tailgate, concern about textile trim wear, a glovebox buried in the touchscreen, a fixed glass roof you can't open, flush door handles that annoy in winter, and over-sensitive driver-attention alerts that nag. Reviewers noted Super Cruise hiccups in rain and erratic lane changes. Individually these are quibbles. Together they describe a first-year product that needed another six months of development.

The spec sheet has its own honesty problem. DC fast charging peaks at 150 kW — fine in 2021, behind the curve in 2026 against 800-volt rivals. There's no frunk in a vehicle class where buyers expect one. These aren't fatal, but they puncture the tech-forward positioning.

Pricing: $50,900 base for 2026 ($49,995 before destination). There's effectively no used market yet — the car launched as a 2025 model — so you're paying new-car money for a first-generation product with documented parts delays. That math only works with a steep discount or a lease that transfers the risk to GM.

Who should skip it? iPhone devotees — seriously, the CarPlay situation alone is disqualifying if your digital life runs through Apple's ecosystem. Anyone who can't tolerate software-first ownership: this car will need updates, dealer visits, and patience. And anyone who needs proven long-term reliability — there is no long term yet, by definition.

Sweet spot: none yet — too new to call. Years to avoid: 2025, the launch year carrying the documented module and software faults. Revisit the 2026 once there's a year of owner data.

The Optiq might become a genuinely good electric crossover. The ride, the range, the design, the Super Cruise capability — the ingredients are there. But right now you're not buying a car so much as funding GM's learning curve, and the Wi-Fi module owner waiting six months is the receipt. Wait for the discount, wait for the software maturity, or buy the competitor that already did its learning in public.
