BYD Song Plus DM-i — deep research dossier

BYD Song Plus DM-i (plug-in hybrid)
What the car is
The BYD Song Plus DM-i is China's best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV, pairing a 1.5L engine with BYD's DM-i super-hybrid system and a Blade LFP battery good for ~110–150 km of electric driving. Abroad it wears different badges: the Seal U DM-i in Europe and the Sealion 6 in Australia — most export-market evidence below comes via those names.
Social-first owner evidence
Loved as a value proposition, debated as an ownership proposition. In China it is a default family-SUV recommendation with enormous sales volume; in Australia (as Sealion 6) owner and press sentiment is warm on efficiency and price but cooler on ride, handling and dealer backup. Direct owner-thread evidence in English is thinner than for the pure EVs — much of the Chinese discussion sits on platforms not accessed here. A Chinese complaint-tracker story (disputed, see below) claims the Song Plus PHEV logged 1,182 complaints in a single month, mostly fuel-system related.
Reliability record
Tier 2 — decent export-market signal (AU press + owner reports, PH/KZ Threads, Chinese media) but thin on direct long-term owner social threads; Chinese domestic community voice not directly accessed.

Pricing (Sept 2026)
- China: ¥135,800–175,800 UNVERIFIED — not confirmed in this research pass.
- Australia (as Sealion 6): Dynamic $48,990 / Premium $52,990 AUD before on-roads (cars24.com.au). ~2,096 sold, ~5% of the under-$60k medium-SUV segment (carsguide).

- USA: not sold in the US.
Support reality
Two different stories. In China the DM-i system is considered proven and servicing is cheap and ubiquitous. In export markets the pattern matches the other BYDs: parts delays and uneven dealers. A Philippines Threads commenter on the Sealion 6 reports "spareparts, waiting time takes 3-6 months" and an electrical problem at 6 months (single anecdote, anti-China framing — treat the timeline as unverified but the parts-delay theme as consistent with AU reporting). The 500-review Australian analysis (EVsGallery) flags parts/repair delays and resale confidence across BYD's AU lineup including the Sealion 6. No battery or hybrid-system recalls surfaced for this model in the research — but note the disputed Chinese complaint-tracker claim below.
Community verdict
In China: the rational default — "cheap to buy, cheap to run, 1,000 km without refueling." In Australia: "a PHEV for HEV money" that owners forgive for soggy handling because the fuel bills are tiny — CleanTechnica's owner fills up every five weeks and tows 1,700 kg with it. The skeptics' line: don't buy the brochure fuel figure; your real consumption depends entirely on whether you actually plug it in.
Hype flags
Low-to-moderate on the car itself; the "1,182 complaints in a month" counter-story needs a flag of its own. It comes from a Sam Evans YouTube video citing one2three6fiveauto.com, a Chinese complaint aggregator — plausible as a data point about early fuel-tank complaints, but the video's framing ("most problematic car in China") is disputed and I could not independently verify the aggregator's methodology. Separately: do not confuse this with the "Seal plug-in hybrid" complaint claims in the same video — that refers to the Chinese-market Seal 06/07 DM-i sedans, a different model from both the Song Plus and the Seal EV.
