BYD Han — deep research dossier

BYD Han — deep research (September 2026)

Powertrains: EV (Han EV) and PHEV (Han DM-i / DM-p / Han L DM). Availability: China is the market that matters — the Han is one of BYD's Dynasty flagships and sells there in six figures a year. Export is a footnote: a brief, overpriced European cameo from late 2022 (Germany pre-sale €72,000) with minimal sales, and some presence in Latin America/Middle East. NOT the US. All owner-community evidence here comes from accessible international sources; nothing is drawn from Chinese platforms I can't access, and no Chinese-platform quotes are invented — which leaves the social layer thin. This file is explicit about that.

What the car is (September 2026)

The Han is BYD's big executive sedan — 5,050 mm of flagship, the car that launched the Blade battery in July 2020. Two flavors: the Han EV (FWD single-motor; the 2025 car moved to 800 V architecture with 506–701 km CLTC range, RMB 179,800–235,800 in China) and the Han DM plug-in hybrid (DM-i efficiency / DM-p performance, 125 km electric range, 1,350 km combined, RMB 165,800–225,800). In April 2025 BYD launched the Han L above it — Super e-platform at 1,000 V, 83.2 kWh, 701 km CLTC, up to 810 kW dual-motor and 2.7 s 0–100 — and in August 2026 came the Da Han EV flagship pre-sale (1,008 km CLTC, RMB 249,900–299,900). The plain Han is now mid-tier in its own family, and its China sales are sliding (17,029 in Aug 2025, down 25% YoY). For export buyers it exists mostly as a used-market curiosity: a handful of €72k 2022 EU cars that never found an audience. US price: n/a. EU used prices: UNVERIFIED from sources in front of me.

Social-first owner evidence (primary layer)

Sources searched: Facebook group search ("BYD Han" → no dedicated owner group found), Threads search ("BYD Han" → only dealer/spec posts, e.g. an Uzbek detailer and a spec-sheet reposter, zero likes), web owner forums (no accessible export-owner community found), press coverage.

  • The honest finding: there is no accessible Han owner community outside China. Facebook group searches returned nothing Han-specific. Threads has dealers and spec-sheet accounts, not owners. The European cars sold in such small numbers that no forum critical mass formed. Per the research rules, I state this plainly rather than fabricating community voices from Chinese platforms.
  • What the press record does show: early Han EVs were praised for ride comfort and interior quality at the price; the ADAS nannying that plagues the Dolphin exists in the Han too (BYD family trait), though export reviews are sparse because so few cars reached reviewers.
  • China-market reporting (English-language China press, not social): the Han's reputation in China is strong — it was the car that made BYD a premium contender — but 2025–2026 coverage is dominated by its declining sales and the Han L / Da Han succession story. The 2025 Han's price cuts (RMB 179,800 base, down from 199,800 on the mid trims) read as a model fighting newer siblings.
  • The 2021 coolant controversy: in July 2021 a Han EV caught fire two days after a third-party crash test; BYD said the testers had replaced the factory purple coolant with red coolant; owners on Weibo then reported their own cars shipped with red coolant, and BYD never clarified (reported by autoevolution, citing owner posts). This is a China-market episode with no recall attached — included as documented press, not as a defect claim.

Social pulse (qualitative): silence. The Han has no accessible owner voice in export markets because it barely exported. In China it's a respected but aging flagship being eaten by its own successors. Anyone buying one outside China is buying into a support vacuum.

Reliability record

  • No Han-specific recall in any source searched (the big 2024 CEPS steering recall covered Dolphin/Yuan Plus, not Han).
  • No battery-degradation or drivetrain failure waves documented in accessible sources.
  • Blade LFP packs shared with the Dolphin family; chemistry reputation is strong.
  • Early-build caveats: 2020–2021 cars are first-year production of a brand-new platform — the coolant controversy above belongs to that era. 2022 facelift (Han EV) and the DM-i/DM-p switch modernized the range.
  • PHEV-specific: Han DM-i/DM-p use BYD's mature 1.5T + EHS hybrid system shared across millions of cars; no Han-specific hybrid failure pattern found.

Support reality

  • Export support is the core risk: a €72,000 2022 EU car with minimal sales volume means thin parts pipelines, thin technician experience, and uncertain long-term dealer commitment. BYD's European network has grown around the Atto 3/Dolphin/Seal — the Han was never part of that push.
  • OTA updates exist; whether early export cars still receive them is UNVERIFIED.
  • In China, support is deep (massive dealer network, huge parts volume) — irrelevant to export buyers.
  • No US story: no car, no support, no parts.

Hype flags

  • "The car that launched the Blade battery" is true and genuinely historic — but it doesn't make a 2020 car a good 2026 buy.
  • Han L marketing (2.7 s, 1,000 V, 400 km in 5 minutes) is China-only theater for export readers; don't let it halo the old Han's value case.
  • The €72,000 EU pre-sale price (2022) was fantasy pricing — roughly double the China price — and it's why the export Han died quietly. Any used valuation anchored to €72k is wrong; anchor to China pricing and heavy depreciation instead.

Model-year timeline 2021–2026

| Year | Generation / facelift | Powertrain / battery / motor changes | Reliability notes | Recalls / TSBs | Used price band | | 2021 | China launch year (launched July 2020) | Han EV (FWD, 76.9 kWh Blade); Han DM PHEV | First-year platform; coolant/fire controversy (July 2021, no recall) | None reported | n/a export; China used UNVERIFIED | | 2022 | Facelift: new front fascia; DM-i/DM-p replace old DM | Han EV AWD 3.9 s variant prominent | No systemic issues documented | None reported | EU new: €72,000 pre-sale (Germany, Sept 2022) | | 2023 | Glory Edition (China) | — | Aging vs newer BYD models | None reported | UNVERIFIED | | 2024 | 2025 Han launched (Sept 2024) | 800 V architecture (ex-base), LiDAR top trim, price cuts | New architecture too new for pattern data | None reported | China new RMB 179,800–235,800 (EV) | | 2025 | Han L launched (Apr 2025, Super e-platform 1000 V) | 83.2 kWh, 701 km CLTC, up to 810 kW | Han L too new for pattern data | None reported | China new RMB 219,800–279,800 (Han L EV) | | 2026 | Da Han EV pre-sales (Aug 2026) | 1,008 km CLTC flagship above Han | — | None reported | UNVERIFIED |

Sweet-spot year: 2024 (the 2025-model Han EV: 800 V architecture, LiDAR/DiPilot on top trims, and meaningful price cuts in China) — for buyers who can actually access the China market. For export buyers there is no sweet spot, only a warning: the car barely exists outside China.

Years to skip: 2020–2021 launch builds (first-year platform, coolant-controversy era); 2022 EU cars (absurd €72k pricing, orphan support, minimal parts pipeline). Skip the export Han entirely unless you have a verified local support path.
