Here's the X3 situation in one sentence: the old one (G01, 2017–2024) is the used buy of the decade, and the new one (G45, 2025+) is the car BMW hopes you'll buy before reading the forums. Both are good cars. Only one of them is a proven one.
The X3 is BMW's compact luxury SUV — a taller 3 Series with a proper boot, xDrive, and engines from the 2.0-liter four (up to 255 hp) to the B58 six in the M40i/M50 (up to 393 hp). The G45 redesign kept the engines, changed almost everything you touch, and moved to iDrive 9. Seats five, swallows a family holiday, parks like a hatchback. This is the sensible BMW, and sensible is why it sells.
What's genuinely good about the G01 is how little drama it serves. Owner forums are full of people who just... drive it. A Bogleheads owner's 2017 CPO car needed nothing mechanical across years of ownership. A BimmerPost X3M owner at 43,000 miles reports "mechanically the vehicle is trouble-free" with no plans to buy an extended warranty — in BMW-land, that's a love letter. The B48/B58 powertrains are the same trusted hardware as the 3 Series. Ride, space, visibility, resale: all strong. The G45 keeps the good bones and adds a genuinely nicer cabin material set — owners concede the seats are wonderful, even mid-rant.
What's actually wrong depends entirely on which generation you're looking at. The G01's sins are small: seat-heater failures, interior squeaks and rattles, the occasional electronic ghost (a Bogleheads owner's display blacks out "maybe two times a year," phantom parking sensors included). The G45's sins are bigger and dumber. Flush door handles owners call terrible. A toggle shifter replacing a lever that worked. One M40i owner, after a G45 loaner: the ergonomics of the old car are "dramatically superior." Half the forum agrees; the other half says you'll get used to it. Nobody says the new interior is better.
Value call: a 2022–2023 G01 xDrive30i or M40i is the sweet spot — all the maturity, none of the G45's experiments, and the market hasn't fully priced the "last of the good ones" premium yet. The M40i's B58 makes it the enthusiast pick; the xDrive30i is the rational one and honestly fast enough. A new G45 runs roughly $50,675 in the US and around €54,000 in Europe (both UNVERIFIED), which is fair money for the hardware — but you're paying launch prices to beta-test the cabin. If you must have new, wait for the 2026s and confirm the TSB rate has fallen.
