BMW 3 Series

If you want one car that does the daily grind and the Sunday-morning back road without apology, buy a G20 3 Series and stop shopping. That's the whole review, but the details matter because the wrong engine or the wrong year turns the default answer into an expensive lesson.

The G20 (2019–2026) is the seventh 3 Series: rear-drive-based, 255 hp in the 330i, 382 hp in the M340i, with a plug-in 330e and a Touring wagon Europe gets and America doesn't. The 2022 facelift brought the curved screen and a bigger battery for the hybrid — up to around 100 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle, which finally made the 330e worth considering for commuters with a driveway charger. Nothing about the formula is radical. That's the point. BMW didn't reinvent the sports sedan here; it just sanded down the rough edges of the F30 that came before, fixed the steering, and bolted in better engines.

What's genuinely good starts with the B58 six in the M340i, which owner forums treat the way sailors treat a lucky compass — it's the most trusted modern BMW engine, and the praise is boring in the best way. The chassis is the other half: owners in the big 52,000-member G20 Facebook group and on BimmerPost keep coming back to steering feel and balance that nothing Japanese or Korean at this money matches. A Team-BHP owner's six-year, 50,000 km 330i log reads like a service-stamp diary — routine maintenance, one suspension part replaced under warranty without argument, "uneventful" year after year. CarBuzz, ranking every 3 Series generation, calls the G20 the most reliable of the lot and "where the sensible money is."

What's actually wrong is all familiar BMW tax, just in smaller doses than the old days. Oil leaks from the filter housing and valve cover. Coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat. Carbon build-up on the direct-injection valves. The timing chain lives at the back of the engine, so when it wears you're paying for the privilege of reaching it. Engine mounts give up before 100,000 km with depressing regularity. And the infotainment — glitchy iDrive is the single most-reported G20 complaint, which is almost funny until your nav freezes on the way to a job interview. Skip this car if you want Japanese maintenance bills, if you plan to tune an M340i (guides explicitly warn that modified examples are reliability roulette), or if long BMW service intervals make you nervous — the guides blame those stretched intervals for half the wear problems.

The social pulse is the healthiest in this cluster. The G20 group is full of mod photos and road-trip shots, not lemon-law threads. Nobody's organizing against this car. The debate, such as it is, is 330i versus M340i — and the answer is that the 330i is the smart buy while the M340i is the one you'll dream about.

Value call: the 2023–2024 facelift cars are the sweet spot — sorted electronics, the B58 at its most proven, and depreciation has done its work. A 2021 car is cheaper but you're buying the earliest iDrive 8 cars and the oldest chains. The 330e only makes sense if you actually plug it in; otherwise it's a 330i carrying a battery for decoration. Against the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class, the G20 wins on driver appeal and ties on running costs — the C-Class rides softer, the A4 is cheaper used, neither steers like this. New 2026 cars sit around €40,850 in Europe, but with the Neue Klasse replacement coming for 2027, dealers are dealing — negotiate like you mean it, and get any "final edition" premium in writing as discount instead.

Buy the G20 because it's the car everything else in the class is still chasing. Just buy it with your eyes open, a service history in hand, and no plans to chip it.
