BYD: the whole lineup, honestly ranked

Published · Researched 2026-09-21

The verdict

BYD is the best argument in the car industry for spending less — eleven models in this research, and nearly every one gives you more hardware per dollar than anything from an established brand. The catch: the cars beat the company behind them. If you charge at home, buy a 2025-or-later build, and don't need America, BYD is the rationalist's pick in every segment it sells in. If you need a road-trip network, a settled dealer, or a car sold in the United States, it isn't.

Where BYD wins

Money and batteries, in that order. The Seal undercut the Model 3 by ~$12,000 at its Australian launch with ventilated seats, V2L that ran a fridge and freezer for eight hours during a blackout, and a Blade LFP pack owners keep verifying — 99% state-of-health at 16,300 km on a Philippine Atto 3, a Sri Lankan Seal at 46,000 km with 440 km of real range. The Seagull is the most important cheap EV on earth: adaptive cruise, lane assist and AEB from 69,800 yuan, teardown-praised by Caresoft's Terry Woychowski. The DM-i hybrids are the sleeper story: Song Plus owners measure 3.8–4.0 L/100 km, and the Qin Plus's 2026 refresh doubled electric range at the same entry price. Eleven models deep — and no battery or drivetrain failure waves anywhere in the evidence.

Where BYD loses

The company, the software, and the residuals — owners defend the car and complain about the company. A 500-review Australian analysis named five recurring complaints: aftersales support, software bugs, charging reality, parts delays, resale confidence. Specifics: a Finnish Seal owner's two-month fight to get a €1,300 repair honored as warranty, 3–6 month parts waits in the Philippines, UK repairers failing to fix an Atto 3 for a month. Software niggles are a family trait: Dolphin ADAS beeping so incessant owners disable half the safety systems before every drive, the Atto 3's V1.11.1 update inflicting a permanent "ice cream truck" AVAS sound, Tang connectivity glitches touching driving functions. Depreciation is weapons-grade on export cars — ~40% in two years on the Dolphin in the UK, 30–40% on the Atto 3 in Pakistan. The signature failures are specific: 12V battery deaths on early Atto 3s (fixed with an LFP 12V in 2025), and the Seagull's front-right suspension arms breaking in Brazil — "by the dozens," always the right side, BYD blaming potholes and denying warranty after 20,000 km while an owner waited 35 days for Chinese parts. Twice.

The matchups

Seal vs Model 3, Ioniq 6, Polestar 2. 3.8-second AWD pace for Model 3 RWD money — but none of Tesla's network or software, and resale owners openly question. The Model 3 answers with Superchargers, but brings the Fremont build lottery. The Ioniq 6 carries this cluster's scariest failure mode — the ICCU defect killing the 12V and drive power — against a 10-year US warranty. The Polestar 2 has its own 12V dead-car stories and a three-attempt camera recall saga. Buy a 2024 Seal at ~40% off; skip 2023.

Atto 3 vs Model Y, EV6, EX5, EV3. The densest owner signal of any BYD — "YES! I WOULD BUY ATTO 3 AGAIN" from Sri Lanka at 40,000 km. 2025 is the buy: the LFP 12V kills the signature failure. The Model Y counters with Juniper refinement and the network but eats tires. The EV6 shares the ICCU cloud; the EX5 and EV3 are fresher threats with thinner records. Skip 2022–early-2023 (recall range, lead-acid 12V); the September 2026 Evo is a wait.

Dolphin vs MG4. Boring-good against sharper-to-drive: comfortable seats, efficiency that beats claims, 5-star NCAP — punctured by ADAS beeping and a September 2024 steering recall on Feb–Dec 2023 builds. The MG4 drives better but answers with phantom braking and early gearbox oil leaks. Used 2024 Comfort at £15–17.5k; never £30k+ new.

Seagull vs nothing. No rival here comes close. Absurd value with one documented flaw the company handles badly. Buy the 2025 facelift; skip 2023.

Sealion 7 vs Model Y. Too young for a verdict — EU deliveries from Q1 2025, no complaint clusters, no residual data. The spec sheet tempts: 800V, 230 kW top trim, 502 km WLTP, £44,990 undercutting the Model Y on kit. But 230 kW is top-trim only (base 150 kW) and the service network is being built live. First-year risk.

Song Plus DM-i (Seal U / Sealion 6) vs RAV4 Hybrid, Outlander PHEV. Buy it only if you'll plug it in daily. Charged nightly it's PHEV-for-HEV-money; never charged, the RAV4 is the better car, full stop. The Mitsubishi's 2026 facelift is genuinely improved; the BYD answers with DM 5.0's ~1,500 km combined range. Skip 2021 first-year DM-i; budget for export parts waits.

Tang vs EV9, Model X. Seven-seat space for the money; the 2024 upgrade (108 kWh, 530 km WLTP, 190 kW DC) fixed the launch car — but €72,000 against German premium rivals was a dare, software glitches recur, a September 2026 recall covered 183,211 older Qin and Tang cars, and you'll solve problems alone. The EV9 is the sane buy; a used Model X at a third of original price is the brave one.

Han vs Model S, BMW i4. The Han launched the Blade battery and is being eaten by its successors — China sales down 25% YoY, no export owner community at all. The Model S has good batteries in this cluster's most resented service experience; the i4 is the driver's pick at a premium. China only, 2024 build; skip the export car.

The China-only caveat

Three of the eleven — Song L, Qin L DM-i, Qin Plus DM-i — are China-only, with Tier-3 evidence and no accessible owner communities. The Song L's design punches above its price in China, the Qin L debuted DM 5.0, and the Qin Plus broke electrified pricing — though its 2021–2023 builds fall under a December 2025 battery recall. Outside China all three are liabilities, not bargains.

The support reality

In China, support is deep. Everywhere else it's a lottery: 3–6 month parts delays, third-party servicing that voids the battery warranty entirely in Thailand and Brazil, and dealer quality from excellent (Sri Lanka) to "absolutely terrible" (UK). The 8-year battery warranty is the trust anchor — but the Finnish owner's €1,300 fight is the counterweight: honored after escalation, not before. Read dealer reviews before car reviews; the car is the safe part, the dealer is the gamble.

Who should buy, who should skip

Buy a BYD if maximum hardware per dollar is the goal, you charge at home, you live outside America, and you can tolerate the dealer lottery — 2025-or-later builds. The Seal, the Atto 3, and the Dolphin are genuine recommendations with the right model year. Skip BYD entirely if you're in America (zero options), if you road-trip on public charging, or if your local dealer has bad reviews. Skip the flagships (Han, Tang) and the China-only models unless you live in China.

One sentence for a friend: BYD sells you more car for less money than anyone else alive, and charges you for it in patience, software quirks, and resale.
